The old adage is true, “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure”
Think about how often you use your teeth, it would be hard to imagine life without them! Your teeth work hard to break down your food so it can be digested easier. Your gums are the lifeline for your teeth, so it’s essential that we care for your teeth and gums properly. If we don’t spend time preventing gum disease, our teeth and our body can have serious health risks. The problems that can develop could affect the way you eat, chew, look and feel. Proper oral care can help you keep healthy teeth for life, as well as prevent heart disease, stroke, and many other health problems.
With proper preventative care, you can avoid painful and expensive problems down the road. Your teeth and mouth will be healthy and if problems do arise you have a better chance of catching them in the beginning stages and saving more than just money in the long run, you could prevent major health concerns.

Why preventive care?
Gum disease may progress without signs or symptoms. In the early stages of gingivitis, bacteria in plaque build-up, causing inflammation of the gums. You may notice your gums bleed during brushing or flossing. At this stage, the gums may be irritated, but the teeth are still secure and no irreversible bone or other tissue damage has occurred yet.
When gingivitis is left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis. At this stage, the gums and bones pull away from the teeth and form pockets. This causes small spaces between your teeth and gums that start gathering bacteria and debris, which can become infected. The body’s immune system will fight the bacteria as the plaque spreads below the gum line.
The bacteria in plaque create toxins that start to break down the bone and connective tissue that hold teeth in place. As the disease progresses, the pockets get bigger, more gum tissue and bone are destroyed, therefore – teeth lose their support and fall out. This is a great reason to keep up your twice-per-year cleaning appointments so our hygienists can evaluate and detect any early signs of disease and take measures to stop progression and reverse the damage.
Most importantly, preventing gum disease is critical because it has been linked to serious health problems. WebMD states: “According to the CDC, researchers have uncovered potential links between gum disease and other serious health conditions. In people with healthy immune systems, the bacteria in the mouth that makes its way into the bloodstream is usually harmless. But under certain circumstances, these microorganisms are associated with health problems such as stroke and heart disease. Diabetes is not only a risk factor for gum disease, but gum disease may make diabetes worse.”
